Going to visit a working farm is a great idea for a road trip for the whole family. It's always exciting to be able to have your child see chickens and be able to see where eggs really come from. Many city kids only see them at the grocery store in cartons, but it's always fun to see where it all started.
There are many working farms they give tours of what happens on a common day and how much time and work it takes to keep it going. Farm life starts early with the feeding of the animals and making sure all animals are healthy looking. Many times you will be able to take a tour to see how cheese is made and where milk comes from and what steps it has to go through before the product reaches the store.
Funny when you ask kids where food comes from, many will tell you simply its comes from the store. They have no idea what steps it takes to get it ready to head to your favorite grocery store.
Be sure when you choose what day to go to the farm, you will wear comfortable clothes. Make sure you and your kids are dressed so that if you get dirty, its ok! Nothing can ruin a trip to a farm then having to worry about getting dirty.
Visiting a local farm can be very educational for your kids, but be sure the kids listen to what is being said and staying with the group is mandatory. Wandering off on your own is not allowed, Of course giving total respect to the farmer giving the tour is very important.
Here are a few farms you are able to tour.
Hewett's Honey Farm - Duncanville AL
At this farm you will be able to see how honey is made. They can take you through the process of setting up your hive to producing the final product, honey. Your kids will love trying all the products that is made with the local honey.
N.T Christian Farm - Deatsville AL
This farm specializes in producing products without chemicals. They are able to raise animals, plants and trees without using chemicals. This includes eggs, chestnuts, fruit trees and making soap.
Visiting a working farm is an educational experience for the whole family. Just remember before you go to check times and days they are open. Be sure to try many of the farm products, you will not regret it!
