SNOW IN THE SOUTH

Here in the south we don't always see a lot of snow, but this year, it appears the ground hog has again seen his shadow and we are in for least another 6 weeks of winter. If you live up north, where many are used to blustery, cold snowy winter days it's not a problem, but here in the south, we panic if the weatherman even mentions the slight hint of sleet, snow or icy conditions.   I will be the first to admit, we are not prepared mentally for snow here and this fact does not shame me in any way. I would much rather have an early spring with flowers and the occasional rain shower, but Mother Nature does not seem to see it this way this year, so let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!
Road trips are nice, but sometimes with all the snow it's not always wise to get out on the roads and with snow comes closed schools and you will soon find yourself sitting on the couch looking at kids who are tired of snow and love using the word, "bored".  I do believe this is the one word I think that should be taken out of their vocabulary and marked out of all dictionaries!   It's planning time for Mom or Dad or whoever is able to stay home in the winter storm. I have tried to compile a list of things to do on a so called "boring day" according to kids!
Making cookies is always fun, just don't try to keep everything neat, it's not going to happen and months from now I am sure you will be finding bits of frosting on the cabinets! Be sure to try the No Bake Cookies. Hopefully you should have all the ingredients on hand.
No Bake Cookies
2 cup Sugar
1/4 stick of butter
2 1/2 cups of Quick Cooking Oats
2 tsp vanilla
1/2 cup of milk
4 Tablespoons Cocoa
1/2 cup peanut butter

Combine sugar, milk, butter and cocoa in sauce pan. Bring to a rolling boil for 2 minutes. Remove from heat and add oats, vanilla and peanut butter. Blend together. Drop by Teaspoonfuls onto wax paper.
This should make about 2 1/2 dozen
There are many things you can do with your kids, playing board games or clearing off the kitchen table and putting a 100 or 200 piece puzzle together. Getting under blankets on the couch and reading your kids favorite book's aloud.
Being snowed in doesn't have to be "boring". It can be a great time for family bonding. Sitting by a fire and simply talking and sharing stories with each other,or if your kids are toddlers get in some cuddling and reading time. Whatever you decide to do, just make sure the word, "bored" is not allowed to be used! Be sure to take advantage of this down time to do nothing but enjoy time well spent with family! You will soon find out being snowed in with family isn't so bad after all.
