Transporting Your New Pet

Transporting Your New Pet

How many times have your kids already asked, "Mom and Dad, can I have a dog?"  Even after several requests, if the time is not right, parents will say no. Of course being a kid, its hard to understand why you need to wait. You ask yourself, "What am I waiting for?"  Going to pick out your first pet is a big responsibility and you have to be ready to take time to care for it , walk it, feed it and water and most importantly take time to play with your new pet.

Then one Saturday morning, Dad walks up to you and tells you to head to the car we are going on a short road trip! You ask, Where are we going Dad?  Dad said," its a secret!" You are really excited now! Not only are you hanging with Dad on a lazy Saturday, but now you have to find out what this secret is! Owning a pet is the best feeling in the whole world. Suddenly you are looking at the world differently through your pets eyes!  Who knew you could have so  much fun jumping in the leaves with your new four paw wonder! You also have a new ball catching buddy and going to the creek is also more exciting with two sets of eyes looking for buried treasures. Yes, taking care of a new puppy or older dog requires a lot of attention and I feel a good age is around 9 or 10.

There are many places where you can get dogs, but my favorite place is getting one from your local humane society or rescue shelter! Usually there is a fee and that normally includes shots and neutering your new animal. Going to the Humane Society can be fun, but with so many dogs and puppies to choose from this may make it difficult to choose the right match for you. Here are some tips for the day you take home your new pet:

  • Take your time when looking.  Always make sure the new animal feels comfortable around you and is friendly. Some can be shy, but with a little love I am sure they will warm up to you in no time. Just make sure you find a dog that you love and that loves you back.
  • Before you leave ask the workers if the dog your wanting has any special notes from previous owners. Just remember your going to be spending many years with your new family member!
  • Before you head to the shelter make sure to prep your house for a new pet. Have all of the supplies on hand, set up their feeding and sleeping areas, and make sure that when you arrive home the house will be quiet and calm.
  • When you head out to pick up your new pet, bring along some treats and items such as a new toy and a leash.
  • Think about how you are going to transport them. If they are going to ride in a crate, make sure to buy or borrow one that is plenty large enough for them.
  • On the ride home, ask your kids to stay as quiet and calm as possible. The animal will likely be nervous or scared, and loud noises will only make it worse.
  • Make sure you are prepared to drive straight home. The sooner you can get the animal into its new surroundings, the better.
Have fun looking for your new furry family member!
